"For a prostitute will bring you to poverty, but sleeping with another man's wife will cost you your life." (Proverbs 6: 26, NLT)
Millions of dollars have been spent on pornography, prostitutes and the like. Thousands of lives have been changed due to adulterous affairs. Spouses are devastated. Children are scarred. And, there will be those who truly believe they are not hurting anyone. Is there really a "secret sin"?
Having an affair may not cost you your physical life, but it could. There are numerous cases where jealous spouses go into a rage, killing their partner or the "other" person. But, having an affair could cost you your marriage, your family, maybe even your career. You could contract a sexually transmitted disease, or possibly have an unwanted pregnancy. But, "life" as you know it will change, and it will cost you something.
Is it no wonder that "Thou shalt not commit adultery" was listed as one of the Ten Commandments? God knew the sacredness of the marriage bed. He knew the consequences that could occur as a result of unwise choices. Satan would like nothing more than for the family unit to be torn apart.
Those vows were not just some fancy words you had to repeat in order to marry the person you love. Those vows were a lifetime commitment---until death you do part. God doesn't want your life ending prematurely as a result of the poor choices you have made. He wants to bring restoration to marriages. He wants to heal the brokenhearted. Keep the commitment to your spouse. Keep your commitment to God.
