. . . and God Created

"There is the sea, vast and spacious, teeming with creatures beyond number—
living things both large and small.
There the ships go to and fro, and the leviathan, which you formed to frolic there."
(Psalm 104: 25, 26  NIV)

In 1963, a song came out, "Puff, the Magic Dragon", by Peter, Paul and Mary.  I remember singing that song as a child.  Both Puff and the leviathan "frolicked by the sea". :)  Since then, there have been cartoons and movies made about Puff.  Unsubstantiated talk was made of this being a song about marijuana.  But, I choose to believe it was a kid's song about a dragon.

When reading the word, "leviathan", a dragon came to mind, especially after reading Job 41.  The entire chapter is devoted to the description of a leviathan.  It was part of a speech that God had made to Job.  I read where some believe this chapter refers to a crocodile, but I would believe it was something much larger.  Why would God have gone to such lengths to prove a point if there really wasn't such a creature?

While researching "leviathan" on the Internet, I found this article by BBC News, http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science_and_environment/10461066.stm, "Sea Monster Whale Fossil Unearthed".  This article was last updated June 30, 2010.  The scientists have dubbed the 12-million year old creature, "Leviathan".  What distinguished this creature from sperm whales were the teeth.  It had upper and lower teeth, whereas the whale only has lower teeth.  The teeth were also twice the size of the sperm whale.  Job 41: 14 refers to the leviathan as having "a mouth ringed about with fearsome teeth".   How interesting! I love it when science lines up with what is already written in the Bible.

All things bright and beautiful,
All creatures great and small,
All things wise and wonderful,
The Lord God made them all.
(from the poem, "Maker of Heaven and Earth", by Cecil Frances Alexander)
