The Potter & The Clay

1 This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD : 2 "Go down to the potter's house, and there I will give you my message." 3 So I went down to the potter's house, and I saw him working at the wheel. 4 But the pot he was shaping from the clay was marred in his hands; so the potter formed it into another pot, shaping it as seemed best to him.  Jeremiah 18:1-4 NIV

He is the Potter; we are the clay. It's an age- old analogy that still stands true today. We may start to bend too much in one direction. Maybe part of our life sinks in as we stop filling that area. Maybe something devastating comes along and simply crushes us. No matter what direction the clay is going, the Potter will patiently work with it until it is formed in the exact shape he wants it to be. It is the same with God. No matter where we find ourselves, He will always patiently begin shaping us again. He will continue to do this until He has formed us in the way He intends us to be.

Today, I am thankful for my Heavenly Father, the Potter at the wheel, that has never given up on me. I am thankful that He has always been patient enough to continue shaping me. As long as I remain willing, He will continue to work on me. There is nothing He can't correct.  As you reflect on where you are today, thank God for all the moments He took the time to reshape you. "Greater things are yet to come!"

My Mind's Made Up!

Yes, this is God's Word on the matter:
"The whole country will be laid waste—
still it won't be the end of the world.
The earth will mourn and the skies lament
Because I've given my word and won't take it back.
I've decided and won't change my mind."
(Jeremiah 4: 27-28,  The Message)

God.  The same, yesterday, today and forever.  Humans may vacillate from one day to the next on their opinions.  Or, consider the woman "whose perrogative it is to change her mind".  Whether it be good---whether it be bad---God doesn't change his mind.  It's His Word!

Jeremiah continues to warn the inhabitants of Judah, that if they don't change their sinful behaviors and disobedience towards God, destruction is surely to come.  God is patient; He will warn.  But, once God decides to bring judgment, He will do so---in his own time. However, God is merciful and will spare the remnant or those who are faithful.

We are still awaiting the promise of Jesus' return to Earth.  Just because it hasn't happened yet, doesn't mean that God's word is not true.  There are so many prophecies in scripture that have already been, or currently being fulfilled.  I believe that Jesus will return for his bride, just as He said.  We have to make up our minds to be patient and remain faithful, until that day appears.  We have to decide not to change our minds, nor our hearts, if we're believing and serving God.

"I've got my mind made up and won't turn back because I want to see my Jesus someday."

Keep Moving Forward

You are right, O God, and you set things right.
I can't argue with that. But I do have some questions:
Why do bad people have it so good?
Why do con artists make it big?
You planted them and they put down roots.
They flourished and produced fruit.
They talk as if they're old friends with you,
but they couldn't care less about you.
Meanwhile, you know me inside and out.
You don't let me get by with a thing!
Jeremiah 12: 1-3 (Message)

"So, Jeremiah, if you're worn out in this footrace with men,
what makes you think you can race against horses?
And if you can't keep your wits during times of calm,
what's going to happen when troubles break loose like the Jordan in flood?
Jeremiah 12: 5 (Message)

There was once a day when God didn't require as much of me as He does now. In the early stages of this walk, He allowed me to work things out in time. He still does that, but the things He waits on are more difficult than they used to be. The other things, He expects me to already have worked out. Today, I find myself asking the above question from verses 1-3 countless times, even though I know the answer. "This person or that person seems to have favor, and yet, you don't require 'this' or 'that' of them."  I am sure I am not the only person to say this to God.

So, what is the answer? There is only one verse that repeats in my mind when I start to wonder about what God asks of me. "The servant who knows what his master wants and ignores it, or insolently does whatever he pleases, will be thoroughly thrashed. But if he does a poor job through ignorance, he'll get off with a slap on the hand. Great gifts mean great responsibilities; greater gifts, greater responsibilities!"   Luke 12:48 (Message)

The more noted translation of this is "to whom much is given, much is required". Once you have spent time studying the Word and seeking God's will, then God will start expecting you to honor the lessons you have learned. Yet, with every new requirement, you also receive a new blessing. To receive, you must first give, and to keep receiving, you must keep giving.

So, why not just stay where you are? Why not stop trying to study and learn more about God?  The answer to that question lies in this verse:  "So clean house! Make a clean sweep of malice and pretense, envy and hurtful talk. You've had a taste of God. Now, like infants at the breast, drink deep of God's pure kindness. Then you'll grow up mature and whole in God."    I Peter 1:1-3 (Message)

My advice to you today can be found in this verse:  "So let's not allow ourselves to get fatigued doing good. At the right time we will harvest a good crop if we don't give up, or quit."   Galations 6:9 (Message)  After all, as Jeremiah 12: 5 states above:  "If we are worn out running against men, how are we going to run against the horses?" The horses are the real battles---they are the spiritual battles.

"For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms."  Ephesians 6:12 NIV

Be blessed today as you continue on your journey. Try not to compare what God asks of you to someone else, or you may end up with their burdens and not just their blessings that you desire. Do not grow weary!   The time for harvest is coming. Finally, remember the struggles that truly matter are not against man, but rather against spiritual forces. However, "You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world."   1 John 4:4 NIV

Slow to Anger

"The Lord does not become angry quickly, and his power is great."   Nahum 1:3

I have to confess that I got a little convicted, maybe quite a bit convicted, after reading Nahum 1: 3. There is one thing that I struggle with on a daily basis: PATIENCE. Even while trying to write today's devotion, my children keep interrupting my train of thought (btw, it doesn't take much!).  Working at home has its good and bad points. It feels like alot of "stop and go" driving. I get involved in a project, then I look up from my computer to see that the kids are enraged in a battle of right vs. wrong. Last week, I was torn between a broken sewage pump, broken washer and a broken HVAC---all of which are needed to keep things running around here! So, yes, I struggle with getting angry and upset. I hope whoever is reading this can relate.  If not, boy, do I need your prayers!

I wonder if it is because of God's great power that He doesn't anger quickly. He has enough power in himself to refrain from losing control. Could you imagine if He reacted like we do in most situtations? There would be planets thrown all over the galaxy! It gives me great peace to know that, within my small "to-do" list, that taking care of humanity is not at the top.

It is easily discerned in the Old Testament that God controlled his anger. God is very angry about sin. And, God is a good God. Both are true. But, depending on where you are in your life, maybe you need to hear one more than the other. Some of us don't know the depth of God's love, and others of us don't take God's anger seriously enough. He really does hate sin. He will not tolerate continued, blatant, "in-his-face" disregard for the commandments He has given. He is angry when we have willfully disobeyed.

People who are living in sin need to know that God hates the sin, not the person. God realizes that the sin is causing separation. The separation, if not united, will lead that person into eternal separation from God. Hell was created in God's anger for the angels that rebelled against him during Satan's revolt. God does not desire for us to dwell there for eternity. But, if we willfully turn our backs to God, that will be the repercussion.

If you are separated from God, today is the day of your salvation. Maybe you need to know the depths of God's love. God loved you so much that He sent his only Son to die on a cross for you. The sin that you are carrying around, Jesus has taken care of. He paid a debt that you could not pay in your own might. The prayer of salvation is simple. A.B.C. Ask. Believe. Confess. Ask Jesus into your heart. Believe that He died on the cross for your sin. Confess that you have accepted Jesus as your Savior.

Day of Rest

“Keep the Sabbath day holy.  Don’t pursue your own interests on that day, but enjoy the Sabbath and speak of it with delight as the Lord’s holy day.  Honor the Sabbath in everything you do on that day, and don’t follow your own desires or talk idly.  Then the Lord will be your delight.  I will give you great honor and satisfy you with the inheritance  promised to your ancestor Jacob.  I, the Lord, have spoken!”    (Isaiah 58:  13-14, NLT)

The Sabbath.  For many, it's Sunday.  A day of worship---a day of rest.  For others, it's the day of the week to sleep late, or spend the afternoon (or morning) at the lake.  How do you spend your Sabbaths?  Is it bringing honor to God?

I have had occupations that required work to be done on Sundays, such as a hospital or funeral home.  There are those who have to work on Sundays because that is what their job schedule requires.  I currently work a part-time job that requires me to work every other Sunday afternoon.  I sometimes struggle with working this job for that reason.  And, after reading the above verses, it really makes me feel as though I need to re-evaluate my situation.

If your job or career is keeping you from worship or church attendance on Sundays, then make it a priority to take one day during the week to rest your body and refresh your spirit.  Our body needs it physically; our souls need it spiritually.  God must be really serious about the Sabbath if He says you can't even talk idly on that day.  The rewards of honoring the Sabbath, which is one of the Ten Commandments, will bring you rest and satisfaction.

Not Our Own

"I know, O LORD, that a man's life is not his own;
it is not for man to direct his steps.
Correct me, LORD, but only with justice—

not in your anger, lest you reduce me to nothing."
Jeremiah 10: 23-24 NIV

I think this may be one of the hardest verses of the Bible to put into practice. Humans are selfish and self-centered people by nature. Americans probably carry these characteristics to a higher degree than some other nationalities would. We spend a lot of time thinking about what we deserve, what we choose, and how we can obtain it.

To realize that a man's life is not his own, certainly changes the perspective of our thinking. Still, realizing it and actually being willing to hand your life over are two very different things. I think so many times we sing songs like, "If you can use anything, God, you can use me," and then when He wants to use us, we don't rise to the call. We don't do so because it generally involves an inconvenience or restructuring of our current lifestyle.

Other times, we are willing to work for God, but we have difficulty when the task set before us doesn't look like we thought it would. In fact, I think that is what happens most to willing hearts. Our hearts are willing to serve, but things get really confusing when God ends up asking us to walk out a plan that we didn't sign up for. I will share that, more often than not, what I thought I was going to do looked a lot different than what God actually had me to do in the end.

Unfortunately, working for God isn't the same as applying for a job in the secular world. In the world, you can choose what you want to obtain a degree in. You can work and study to obtain that degree, and then you have several options to choose from as to what company you might apply with, what hours you would like to work, and what salary you would like to make. Well, in today's times, in this small town the options are smaller. However, you get my point.

With God, you simply state you are willing to serve. You have the option to state what area you think you would like to serve in. Yet, in the end, God gives you the assignment that is best for His Kingdom agenda, and it isn't always the one that is most convenient or most fun for you.

When that occurs, I like to remember that what I am doing isn't just for today---it's for eternity. If I speak words that God gives to me, and it only falls on a few ears, those words will not simply disappear. They have been released into the Earth with a Kingdom agenda, and their purpose may lie in a setting that occurs years after I am gone. However, I fulfilled my duty to God by releasing them when asked.

The same concept applies to serving Him out in the mission field or in the church. Sometimes, you may feel as if you aren't reaching many people with what God has asked you to do. Or, maybe you think it simply takes up too much time. After all, sometimes we simply don't see the return on our investment in our lifetimes. Every action in God's Kingdom is an investment, but you don't make investments without first pulling resources from somewhere else. All of these thoughts can be disheartening, but we only feel this way when we are focused on what we want and what we deserve. If we could actually understand that our life is not our own, then we would be more willing to follow the steps laid before us without always having to see the reason or the results right away.

As I said, this is a difficult verse to put into action. It is not easy to lay down your life and, in essence, the lives of your family that follows you and say to God that you are truly willing for Him to use it according to His purposes. So today, I ask that God would correct us for any ambitions we have that are not His. I pray that we would be directed towards His path for us and not the one we think looks most appealing. However, as in the verse above, I ask that He correct us with justice and not anger because we couldn't stand the anger.

American Idols

"All those who make no-god idols don't amount to a thing, and what they work so hard at making is
nothing. Their little puppet-gods see nothing and know nothing—they're total embarrassments! Who would bother making gods that can't do anything, that can't 'god'?"    (Isaiah 44: 9-11a, The Message)

That widely popular televised talent contest.  Millions of viewers each week.  "American Idol".  I've only watched it a couple of times, but if you live in the U.S., or anywhere else for that matter, you probably have heard of and know a little bit about the show.  I even know about Simon.  There may not be anything wrong with the show, but the name itself doesn't sit right with me.  And, I know there are those who will make it a priority to watch it each week, even if it means skipping church---OUCH!

In today's text, Isaiah talks about idolatry in reference to making statues to worship.  But, what value do they really have?  They can't do anything for the the people.  They're not a living God.  The people wanted something physical, so the blacksmiths and the carpenters would create these images from stone or wood.

An idol can be defined as, "An image used as an object of worship; One that is adored, often blindly or excessively; Something visible but without substance."  Are there things in your life that are taking precedence over God?  Where do you seek security and happiness?  Anything that is given sacred power or value becomes your 'god'.  Check out those things in your life that you may be worshiping.

Patience is a Virtue

"But those who trust in the Lord will find new strength.
They will soar high on wings like eagles.
They will run and not grow weary.
They will walk and not faint."
(Isaiah 40: 31, NLT)

During the time I was leading a recovery support group, I purchased the Life Recovery Bible. It contains a lot of footnotes on various scriptures, as well as devotionals that go along with the 12-Step program. Even though you may not be in recovery, there is some valuable information that we all could use in our daily Christian living. Here is one of the devotionals that is in reference to Step 11 and the above verse in Isaiah:

"We all want to recover as quickly as possible. It's hard to be patient as we wait for the process to work. Sure, we realize that we didn't get to the difficult spot we are in overnight. We understand that we cannot undo a lifetime of damage in just a few moments. But, still it is a challenge to wait patiently. Every part of the recovery process requires time and patience. We must learn to wait on God.

Waiting on the Lord has its rewards. We can remain calm when it appears that we aren't making any progress in recovery. As we learn to trust the Lord and wait on him, He will lift us up like wind beneath the wings of an eagle. God gives us the strength and stamina to bear up under the strain so that we won't faint or collapse under it. As we develop patient faith in God, we will be able to endure to the end of the race---and win."

Be a Blessing

Isaiah 61: 1, “The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to preach good tidings to the poor; He has sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the person to those who are bound.”

Ministry is not always easy.  It is the ability to put others before yourself.  Many people feel that if they don’t have a title, job description, or a microphone in their hand, then they don’t have a ministry. I want you to know, that if you are saved by the grace of Jesus Christ, you have a ministry!  As I stated in the opening sentence, ministry is not always easy. You see, no matter what kind of situations we go through or battle, we are still required to be a blessing.

A few weeks ago, I began to really question ministry. In a conversation with the Holy Spirit, I would find myself complaining, “Ok, I will do my best to be a blessing---love people, put others before myself, and walk around with a smile on my face. I will do my best, but it all feels so fake, because I’m not truly happy!” I would then realize that this was more selfishness than anything, because at the root of the problem, I still worried and cared more about my life than the lives of others. I would then discover, through a daily devotion, that true joy is a choice---one that comes to those who have devoted themselves to something greater!

When we decide to live for something greater, walking in the anointing in which the Lord has given us, we find true joy. There is joy when you give unto someone who is less fortunate.  There is joy when just a smile and love can heal broken hearts. The Spirit of the Lord is upon you for something greater! May we live our lives to be a blessing!

Redemption Prophet

"For day after day they seek me out; they seem eager to know my ways, as if they were a nation that does what is right and has not forsaken the commands of its God." Isaiah 58: 2

The more we read into the Book of Isaiah, the more easier it is to distinguish that Isaiah was a prophet of redemption. He pleaded, with the help of the Holy Spirit, to draw Israel back to the ways of God. Even today, his words are still relevant to our daily walk.

Matthew Henry, in his commentary, wrote about Isaiah 58: 3-9:

"A fast is a day to afflict the soul; if it does not express true sorrow for sin, and does not promote the putting away of sin, it is not a fast. These professors had shown sorrow on stated or occasioned fasts. But they indulged pride, covetousness, and malignant passions. To be liberal and merciful is more acceptable to God than mere fasting, which, without them, is vain and hypocritical. The heavy yoke of sin and oppression must be removed. As sin and sorrow dry the bones and weaken the strongest human constitution; so the duties of kindness and charity strengthen and refresh both the body and mind. Good works will bring the blessing of God, provided they are done from love to God and man, and wrought in the soul by the Holy Spirit."

These Three

"What can we bring to the Lord?
What kind of offerings should we give him?
Should we bow before God with offerings of yearling calves?
Should we offer him thousands of rams and ten thousand rivers of olive oil?
Should we sacrifice our firstborn children to pay for our sins?

No, O people, the Lord has told you what is good, and this is what he requires of you:
to do what is right, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God."
(Micah 6: 6-8, NLT)

Do you try to win favor with God?  What things are you doing in an attempt to impress Him?  Some may give God possessions or their most prized treasures.  Others may offer up religious acts of worship.  God doesn't want those things unless they are accompanied by a life that pleases Him.

The Old Testament is filled with all kinds of laws and regulations that were to be followed.  However, here in Micah, it clearly states, there are three things God wants us to do.  And, by so doing, God is pleased.

"People have tried all kinds of ways to please God, but God has made his wishes clear:  He wants his people to be just, merciful, and to walk humbly with Him.  In your efforts to please God, examine these areas on a regular basis.  Are you fair in your dealings with people?  Do you show mercy to those who wrong you?  Are you learning humility?"  (Life Application Bible)

He Knew You

"Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations."
( Jeremiah 1:5)

In this verse, the Lord is speaking to Jeremiah and telling him he has been chosen to be a prophet. God knew he would call Jeremiah for this job at this time before he was ever born.

Sometimes, it's easy to feel that you have fallen off of God's radar. You may think He doesn't see you waiting on the sidelines, waiting for your assignment. Yet, that's not true. God knew you before you were ever born. He has a plan for you, and in due time, He will reveal it to you. Meanwhile, the best thing we can do while waiting is to prepare ourselves through Bible study and prayer.

Be patient, God has a plan for you!

Prepare The Road

"And it will be said: "Build up, build up, prepare the road! Remove the obstacles out of the way of my people."    (Isaiah 57:14)

Every move of God begins with a forerunner. God usually calls someone to do something out of the ordinary. Then, that person begins the journey with a step of faith and starts to clear the path for others. If God has called you to be a forerunner, or if He has called you to support someone who is, the best way to clear the path is through prayer and persistence. We must first clear the stumbling blocks ourselves, and then, we must pray for those following to clear them as well. Every obstacle we are faced with is an opportunity to make the path easier for someone else. We must face these obstacles with courage and determination. As 3trees Church begins a new journey on a new path, I pray for both the leaders and the followers. May we continue to clear the road for the harvest and remove the obstacles through prayer and persistence.

The Party's Over!

"At that time the Lord, the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, called you to weep and mourn.
He told you to shave your heads in sorrow for your sins
and to wear clothes of burlap to show your remorse.
But instead, you dance and play; you slaughter cattle and kill sheep.
You feast on meat and drink wine.
You say, “Let’s feast and drink, for tomorrow we die!”
(Isaiah 22: 12-13, NLT)

A prophecy has been spoken about Jerusalem.  They would be attacked unless God's people returned to Him.  They took an inventory of their situation and weaponry, and left God out of the picture.  They thought they could handle things on their own without God's help. The people of Judah were being attacked on all sides, so they gave up hope.  They figured, "What's the use? We're going to die anyway.  Let's just do what we want."   Instead of repenting, Judah chose to feast. They threw a party!

"Today, we still see people giving up hope when faced with difficulties.  There are two common responses to hopelessness:  despair and self-indulgence.  But, this life is not all there is, so we are not to act as if we have no hope.  Our proper response should be to trust God and his promises."  (Life Application Bible)

Many live as though "life is one big party", giving no thought for tomorrow.  Instead of being remorseful for sinful lifestyles, they keep putting off a commitment to God.  But, one day, our time here on Earth will be over, and judgment will come.  Will you be ready?

A New Season

This particular blog does not go along with today's reading; I just felt like I needed to share this:

Over the course of the last year, our church body has been in a building project, preparing a place for the harvest. It was September 7th, 2008, the day I moved to Russell Springs. Just a few years before, I was presented with an opportunity to come earlier, but I didn’t take the chance. Just a few months after I arrived in 2008, our pastor cast the vision of a new facility, and we launched into this building project. After the announcement was made, I walked out into the parking lot, and I asked the Lord, “Of all the times I could have moved here, why now?” The Holy Spirit answered, “It’s a building season.”

Now, being here for almost two years, I can honestly say it has indeed been the most significant building season of my life. I have not ever experienced this much spiritual growth in such a short time span. However, this spiritual building season has, without a shadow of a doubt, been the most difficult, painful, and even loneliest season of my life. It has seemed all my plans and hopes I had for my future vanished right before my eyes. Everything I had worked for---desired---all faded away. If that’s not an empty feeling, I don’t know what is. I began to look at my life and would feel worthless and like a true failure. Depression and loneliness would be the python that would slowly slither its way around me, squeezing the breath and life out of me, stealing my joy. I would even question God, “I’ve tried to make all the right decisions, to get closer to you, but why does it feel like I made all the wrong decisions?” I felt so defeated I would even question my move here. But, as I called, the Holy Spirit answered, “You're still here, and I’m still with you!”

I would once again remember that this is a building season and would ponder on the building project. I realized that it has taken a long time for that building to go up. It has taken hard work---blood, sweat, and tears. It has even been a painful, frustrating process for a lot of people involved. Though it has taken quite a bit of time for that building to go up, soon it will come into completion! Philippians 1:6 states, “Be confident, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it!”

More and more, I’m learning patience. Patience isn’t just the ability to wait.  It’s the ability to keep a good attitude while you do it. Some things may have gone wrong in your life and not like you’ve hoped. One thing I have learned from the past is what not to be in the future! So, let me remind you.  You are still here, still running the race, and He is still with you. When He is with you, your hope is alive, your dream is alive, and in you, He is alive!

As our new facility is in the final stages of the building process, I believe that we are entering into a new season and a new day! The glory of the latter house will be greater than the glory of the former house. The latter rain of His presence will be greater than the former rain! And, any dry season we have experienced on a personal level, or even a corporate level, is coming to an end! Your best days and blessed days are ahead! It’s a new season, it’s a new day, and it’s coming your way!

PUSH!

"This is the day of distress and rebuke and disgrace, as when children come to the point of birth and there is no strength to deliver them." Isaiah 37: 4

We have all heard of the popular Christian statement "PUSH". It's an acronym for "Pray Until Something Happens." When you don't have the strength or wisdom for the battle ahead, just PUSH!

While reading today in Isaiah 37, I ran across a scripture that brought the word PUSH to mind. Isaiah states, "This is the day of distress and rebuke and disgrace, as when children come to the point of birth and there is no strength to deliver them." Any mother can relate! You get so desperate to give birth, that you push until you lose all your strength (or you Push Until Something Happens!)

My personal story was that my body, under distress, could not deliver my daughter. So, my doctor called for an emergency C-section. After about 30-45 minutes, my little girl, Natalie Grace, was born. Sometimes, God will reach his mighty hand into our life to perform a C-section! When we can't do it on our own, He will see us through!

If you are feeling distressed, just PUSH! That's what King Hezekiah did. After hearing the report from his enemy, he tore his clothes and went into the temple of the Lord. He Prayed Until Something Happened!

Zzz . . .

"He will not let you stumble; the one who watches over you will not slumber.
Indeed, he who watches over Israel  never slumbers or sleeps."
(Psalm 121: 3,4  NLT)

Gals, remember slumber parties?  Staying up most of the night---talking, giggling, playing games, and eating junk food.  Ever wondered why they're called "slumber" parties when, most of the time, not much sleeping is done?  When I was young, they were sometimes called "pajama" parties.  That makes more sense---at least there were "pj's" being worn.

God never slumbers or sleeps, and He doesn't even need caffeine.  He's always watching over us.  It's comforting to know, that when we need to talk to Him, we don't have to arouse Him from a deep sleep.  We don't have to wait for Him to have His morning coffee before we can get His attention.

Most of us will lose sleep due to worry or stress.  God wants us to bring our troubles to Him in prayer, lay our heads down and have a peaceful night of rest.  Why should we stay awake when God is already up?  Sweet dreams!

"Now, I lay me down to sleep, I pray the Lord my soul to keep . . ."

See No Evil, Hear No Evil....

18 "Hear, you deaf; look, you blind, and see!
19 Who is blind but my servant, and deaf like the messenger I send? Who is blind like the one committed to me, blind like the servant of the LORD ?
20 You have seen many things, but have paid no attention; your ears are open, but you hear nothing."  (Isaiah 42:18-20)

This statement from Isaiah many years ago reminds me very much of similar statements I am hearing from pulpits in America today. It seems God is trying to tell us that we are not paying attention. We have let ourselves be hardened, and thus blinded in such a way, that we miss important things. Words are being said to us, but we walk away as if we never heard them. Wonders are being shown to us, but we turn the other direction as if we never saw it.

I have tried to seek discernment regarding what I allow in my home and what I do not. For this reason, our viewed channels have changed significantly in the last few years. However, I have learned that children see much more than we do. My children will tell me something is bad without even trying. They didn't pray about it or seek wisdom. They just know. Their spirits just sense these things before mine does. I can flip a channel and within seconds, one of my kids will tell me if it is a bad show. They do the same with music on the radio. So, I have learned that if you are trying to live a pure life, you should keep children around. They will always speak up if you missed something.

For adults, we have seen so many things. We have exposed ourselves to media outlets, the Internet, and even some books until we no longer pay attention to things that are not good. One day in prayer, I had a vision about a veil of darkness over the Earth. In the vision, prayers of the people were opening up holes in the veil and light was shining through. Since then, I have spent years praying for God to remove the blinders, praying that I can see the unseen, and I still have a long way to go.

The world itself is constantly fighting for us to not see what is really going on. It is a constant effort on our part to remain alert. Often, God is trying to show us things or speak to us, and we are too distracted to pay any attention. Confusion rules our thoughts rather than knowledge. When we can't decide what is right, we go the easiest route. The easiest route is often the way of the world, while God is right in front of us trying to tell us to take a detour. God will always supply us with everything we need to follow the right paths, but we too often ignore Him without even realizing it.

In our personal lives, we often allow Satan to perform magic acts and acts of illusion so that we can't determine what is real and what isn't. As humans, we focus a lot on feelings. Satan loves to bring up feelings of anger, insecurity, entitlement, bitterness, jealousy, etc. as he performs his act. We will be distracted on one side while he shows us all the things he wants us to believe in order to provoke these feelings. On the other side, God is trying to get us to listen and see what is really happening and to approach situations with love. Often, our negative feelings win out. It is tricks like that which allow marriages to crumble and friendships to dissolve.

No matter what you are facing today, God has the perfect view and He can see every detail. As you are walking down your path, God knows where the next speed bump is, the next caution light, or the next detour. Ask Him to show you truth. Ask God to help you see and hear more clearly today.

A New Thing

"Forget about what's happened;  don't keep going over old history.
Be alert, be present. I'm about to do something brand-new.
It's bursting out! Don't you see it?
There it is! I'm making a road through the desert,
rivers in the badlands."
(Isaiah 43:18-19,  The Message)

3trees Church began as Higher Praise Church in September of 2000 inside a storefront building with only a handful of people. And the rest, as they say, is history. We have almost 10 years of history within the church at this point. For some, who have personal ties going beyond that, the history goes back even further.

Over the years, much has happened. People have come and gone, but more importantly, lives have been changed and people have grown. Unfortunately, with human nature as it is, people have also found offenses or conflicts. It's normal. It happens. Within our current building, we have grown as a family, and along with that, we have fed both the good and the bad of ourselves. It's what families often do. As Pastor Eric said in so many words, there is something on this hillside that allows us to keep getting beyond ourselves and reaching for more of God.

I heard a song by Amy Grant last night with the following lyrics, "There's so much good in the worst of us.  There's so much bad in the best of us.  It never makes sense for any of us, to criticize the rest of us.  We'll just find what we're looking for---we'll find it and so much more."

I drove to the church last night and spent some time just looking at the new building. There it sat, in all it's wonder, almost exactly as the pastor envisioned it---to every detail of how he felt God wanted it. Having seen the progress of several home building projects, it can only be God that allowed everything to work out as it has. I won't say it has been without difficulty, without tough decisions, or without some rough patches, but there it is!  Yet, as beautiful as it is, what will really matter is what we put inside of it and what we do inside of it. It will be the people that makes the building remain beautiful just as our own soul makes us beautiful or not.

Our theme for 2010 is Begin Again in 2010. On August 8, 2010, I believe we truly step into our opportunity to begin again. Everything we have been up to this point has shaped us, molded us, and given us the skills we need to pursue our destiny. However, I do not believe God intends for us to step into the future while looking back at the past. I do not believe He intends for us to carry the old with us into the new. I truly believe He wants to do a new thing on our hillside and in our hearts. I believe we are blessed to have been given this opportunity, and we should seize it with excitement and willingness.

It is my personal conviction that it is time for all of us to clean our slates. It is time to erase anything and everything old that could stand between us and God. Today, I ask you to take everything to the cross and leave it there. It no longer matters who, what, when, and where. Leave it with God. We also need to do the same within ourselves. If we harbor any guilt from past mistakes, if we are carrying any bitterness from things we wish we hadn't done, if we have any doubt God wants to use us, we need to let it go. Let it go, give it to God, and walk in the forgiveness He has offered you.

Today, let us erase it all. On August 8th, let us walk into our future with a completely clean slate, ready to be written on by God.  With clean hands and a pure heart, let us say, "Here we are God---use us!"

Angry Waters

"At Meribah, too, they angered the Lord, causing Moses serious trouble.
They made Moses angry, and he spoke foolishly."
(Psalm 106:  32, 33  NLT)

I'm reading the book, "Redeeming Love" by Francine Rivers.  Last night, some new characters were introduced, one of them being named Meribah.  While reading the text for today, I came across that name again.  So, I figured I should see what that name meant, and focus on that for today.

Meribah means "quarrelling or arguing".  Today's scripture is referring to the Israelites as they are being led out of Egypt.  Psalm 106 takes you through that journey.  Here, at Meribah, the people are upset because there is no water to drink.  They start complaining to Moses, and in turn, he becomes angry.  (You can read this account in Exodus 17).  As a result, Moses is instructed to strike the rock in order to get water.  Once again, God shows mercy to His people even though they continue to complain.

Do you have your own "Meribah"?  Are you in a place right now where all there seems to be is fighting and arguing?  God is trying to take you to your Promised Land.  He wants you to trust in Him to provide, whether that be food, clothing, shelter, etc.  He is our life source.  God gives us "living water" through His word.

"but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life."  (John 4: 14, NIV)

. . . and God Created

"There is the sea, vast and spacious, teeming with creatures beyond number—
living things both large and small.
There the ships go to and fro, and the leviathan, which you formed to frolic there."
(Psalm 104: 25, 26  NIV)

In 1963, a song came out, "Puff, the Magic Dragon", by Peter, Paul and Mary.  I remember singing that song as a child.  Both Puff and the leviathan "frolicked by the sea". :)  Since then, there have been cartoons and movies made about Puff.  Unsubstantiated talk was made of this being a song about marijuana.  But, I choose to believe it was a kid's song about a dragon.

When reading the word, "leviathan", a dragon came to mind, especially after reading Job 41.  The entire chapter is devoted to the description of a leviathan.  It was part of a speech that God had made to Job.  I read where some believe this chapter refers to a crocodile, but I would believe it was something much larger.  Why would God have gone to such lengths to prove a point if there really wasn't such a creature?

While researching "leviathan" on the Internet, I found this article by BBC News, http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science_and_environment/10461066.stm, "Sea Monster Whale Fossil Unearthed".  This article was last updated June 30, 2010.  The scientists have dubbed the 12-million year old creature, "Leviathan".  What distinguished this creature from sperm whales were the teeth.  It had upper and lower teeth, whereas the whale only has lower teeth.  The teeth were also twice the size of the sperm whale.  Job 41: 14 refers to the leviathan as having "a mouth ringed about with fearsome teeth".   How interesting! I love it when science lines up with what is already written in the Bible.

All things bright and beautiful,
All creatures great and small,
All things wise and wonderful,
The Lord God made them all.
(from the poem, "Maker of Heaven and Earth", by Cecil Frances Alexander)

Prophets: The Real Deal

"But as for me, I am filled with power, with the Spirit of the Lord, and with justice and might, to declare to Jacob his transgession, with Israel his sin.... Micah 3:8

Her leaders judge for a bribe, her priests teach for a price, and her prophets tell fortunes for money, Yet they lean upon the Lord and say, "Is not the Lord among us? No disaster will come upon us." Micah 3:11

While reading today's scripture, the thought crossed me, "What more can I add to what these powerful prophets are speaking." Trust me, I don't think I would like to go head to head with them any time soon! They came against those who had a form of godliness, but denied the power thereof! They declared right for right, and wrong for wrong. There was no doubt whom they spoke against once the words proceeded from their mouths. It would do many Americans, leaders, pastors, evangelists, etc, some good to read the truths in the Bible. When everyone around you is caving in to self-satisfying Christianity, read about the prophets of old. They will soon bring the light of God to your life.

Me and My Shadow

"Those who live in the shelter of the Most High will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty.  He will cover you with his feathers.  He will shelter you with his wings.  His faithful promises are your armor and protection."
(Psalm 91:  1, 4   NLT)

The "shadow of His wings" is a figure of speech symbolizing God's protection.  Just as a mother bird protects her young by covering them with her wings, God wants to guard and protect us from danger or harm.

God is our shelter and refuge for when we are afraid.  We must trade in our fears and have faith in Him.  But, in order to do this, we must dwell and rest in God.  We can't just have a "casual" relationship.  It's when we live in His presence that we can find the rest we are looking for.

Just like the words from the song made famous by Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis, Jr., "you'll never get rid of your shadow" or "no soul can bust this team in two", God's presence follows us wherever we go.  "It's just me and my shadow, strolling down the avenue"

Thank you, Lord, for always being there.  I'm thankful I can find rest in You!

Rejoice!

"At that time, this song will be sung in the country of Judah:
We have a strong city, Salvation City,
built and fortified with salvation.
Throw wide the gates
so good and true people can enter.
People with their minds set on you,
you keep completely whole,
Steady on their feet,
because they keep at it and don't quit.
Depend on God and keep at it
because in the Lord God you have a sure thing."
Isaiah 26:1-4 Message Bible

"The path of right-living people is level.
The Leveler evens the road for the right-living.
We're in no hurry, God. We're content to linger
in the path sign-posted with your decisions.
Who you are and what you've done
are all we'll ever want.
Through the night my soul longs for you.
Deep from within me my spirit reaches out to you."
Isaiah 26:7-9 Message Bible

"But friends, your dead will live,
your corpses will get to their feet.
All you dead and buried,
wake up! Sing!
Your dew is morning dew
catching the first rays of sun,
The earth bursting with life,
giving birth to the dead."
Isaiah 26:19 Message Bible

In Isaiah 26, Isaiah is sharing his visions of the last days, the coming of the Messiah, and the ultimate victory of good over evil.

Nothing this world has ever offered will have a lasting effect on you. Not in life---nor after death---will this world be able to console you for any length of time. Only things from God will change your life and determine your destiny for all eternity. Only God can offer true peace.

Let's rejoice this morning! Christians, we win either way! Stay strong in your fight! Live a righteous life! Stay close to Him even when the world falls away. He will always bring you peace in times of trouble. He will make your path straight when everyone around you is walking on treacherous terrain. He will take care of those who are faithful to Him. In the midst of everything that may be going on in your life, His hand will steady you. He always does.

Remember, one day He is coming back and all that was wrong will be corrected! One day, we will join together as one. As the Church, His bride, we will all be a part of that miraculous day and will dwell with our Lord forever!

Fellow Christians, let's join in celebration this a.m.! Share the Good News! Let young and old turn to Jesus---fling wide you heavenly gates!!

If My People....

My readings today fall into Isaiah 14. This chapter depicts more of Isaiah's prophecies against Babylon and other nations. However, my mind keeps going back to II Chronicles 7: 14:

"If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land."   (II Chronicles 7: 14)

I watched a History channel special the other night about our nation. It was quite an extensive history review, and I learned many things I had forgotten about our great nation. We have been a people who God has blessed. However, it seems to me from watching the history special, that after so long of being blessed by God, then we started to determine we didn't need God. We have forgotten how we got to where we are. It's the classic case of giving ourselves credit for something we did not do.

Looking around, I believe we are in at least as much turmoil now as a nation as any point in our history. With so many natural disasters, it feels to me that God may have lifted His hand of protection off of our nation. From reading the Bible, He often does give his people warning and opportunities to heed to those warnings before He issues His final judgment. I feel that is where America is right now.

On this Independence Day weekend, let us remember the One who blessed this great nation and allowed it to become what it is in the first place. We are the people; we must join together and call upon Him with humble repentance. And, just like in the Bible days, for all those who aren't doing so, it is up to the Christians to be the Voice crying out and beseeching others to heed His warnings.

There is one thing I have learned from our Old Testament reading so far this year. It is simply that God will only tolerate being ignored for so long.

Food for Thought

"Timely advice is lovely, like golden apples in a silver basket"
Proverbs 25:  11  (NLT)

"If I had only known that sooner".  "Hindsight is 20/20".  Knowing the right words to say at the right time.  Timely advice.  Don't you wish you could have had someone to advise you before you made that costly purchase?  Or, perhaps before you made that life-altering choice?

Everyone needs some advice from time to time, even those of us (yes, myself included) that have very strong opinions and viewpoints on a variety of matters.  No one can "know it all", unless, of course, it's God.  We all could use some help along the way.

That's why we have trained guidance counselors, or marriage and family counselors.  Individuals that can help to guide us, to point us in the right direction.  Someone with an objective opinion when our life becomes unsettled.  Most people truly want to hear advice, whether or not they adhere to it.  They want someone to listen to them, to offer support and wise words, helping them to make some hard decisions.

But, even as Christians, we all too often will run to someone else before we go to God.  We will talk about problems and situations to others, then finally, we look up and ask, "Now, God, what should I do about this?"  God wants us to come to Him first.  He wants us to seek answers in Him.  Anything we may encounter in this life, an answer has already been provided in His Word.
